Chinese Govt Targets Smart Water‑Use and Recycling Systems by 2027

The Chinese government has introduced a new policy that will speed up the development of machines that deal with water supply, usage, recycling, and industrial water systems. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) along with the Ministry of Water Resources are the ones who set in motion this plan, which has defined water-saving equipment as a major player in the water-conserving industry.

Looking ahead, China targets a globally competitive position for its water‑saving equipment industry by 2030. This means a full ecosystem of high‑performance, efficient and durable products — backed by Chinese manufacturing, innovation and exports.

Water resources in China face pressure from population size, industrial consumption and uneven distribution of supply. A shift to more efficient water use and recycling is seen as vital to water‑security goals. The equipment sector — covering water supply, industrial cooling systems, recycling of wastewater and smart management — plays a central role. Also, policies show China’s willingness to attract foreign and private investment into the water‑conservation equipment and services market.

Research will focus on:

The plan emphasises:

Policies aim to:

Financial, fiscal and regulatory supports include:

For industry: This presents opportunities for equipment manufacturers, sensor and IoT firms, engineering and construction firms involved in water‑use infrastructure, and firms focused on smart water management. Domestic and international firms that can join manufacturing, export or technology‑service supply chains may find prospects in China’s major push.

For travellers: While this is industrial‑policy oriented, the policy suggests that China’s urban and industrial water systems will increasingly feature advanced equipment, smart metering, efficient recycling and cooling systems. If you are visiting industrial zones, eco‑parks or future ready cities in China, you may notice improved water‑use infrastructure, smart water‑monitoring kiosks or signage about water‑conservation technologies.

China made it public that it would develop its water-saving equipment industry within a definite period, which includes having a robust domestic market by 2027 and taking the lead in the world by 2030. The country plans to support technology development, standards, manufacturing, and market all at the same time, thus making this plan a major part of China’s water-resource management strategy and its overall industry upgrade.
